Tady jsou některé vánoční tradice ze světa. Některé jsou docela zvláštní, nemyslíte?

Německo Kdo první najde na vánočním stromečku ozdobičku ve tvaru okurky, získává dárek navíc a samozřejmě okurku.

Venezuela V Karakasu se do 8 hodin ráno uzavřou silnice pro auta a děti jedou na ranní mši na kolečkových bruslích.

Ukrajina Populární vánoční ozdobou je pavučina, protože vidět pavučinu na vánočním stromku vám přinese štěstí.

Island Lidé si dávají k Vánocům knihy, které si pak celou noc čtou.

Japonsko Oblíbené vánoční jídlo je smažené kuře z KFC.

Itálie Dětem nosí dárky 5. ledna La Befana, čarodějnice na koštěti.

Norsko Na Štědrý den je potřeba schovat všechna košťata a smetáky v domě, aby se jich nezmocnily čarodějnice.

Španělsko Betlém není kompletní bez figurky kadícího muže tzv. El Caganer!

Strange Christmas traditions

There won't be Christmas without Christmas traditions! What are your traditions? Do you cut an apple and look for a star, do you throw a slipper, do you kiss under the mistletoe?

Here are some Christmas traditions from around the world. Some of them are pretty bizarre, don't you think?

Germany The first person, who finds the pickle ornament on the Christmas tree, receives an extra present and a pickle of course.

Venezuela Streets of Caracas are closed until 8 am and kids can roller skate to the morning mass.

Ukraine Popular Christmas tree ornament is a spider web, because if you see a spider web on the Christmas tree, it will bring you good luck.

Iceland People exchange books on Christmas Eve and then spend the rest of the night reading.

Japan Popular Christmas food is fried chicken from KFC.

Italy La Befana, a witch riding a broomsticks brings presents to the children on Epiphany Eve (Jan 5).

Norway It is necessary to hide all the brooms in the house, otherwise witches might come to the house and take them.

Spain Nativity scene is not complete without the figure of the pooper, known as El Caganer.

Pokud jste více, jak jednou odpověděla ano, je čas se pohodlně usadit a pustit si film. Dneska je to jeden z mých nejoblíběnějších.

Podnikavá dívka

je americký film z roku 1988, který režíroval nedávno zesnulý Mike Nichols. Ve filmu září Melanie Griffith a zdatně ji sekundují Harrison Ford, ještě v plné kráse a nadmíru protivná Sigourney Weaver. Na tomhle filmu mám ráda dvě věci. Záběry na Manhattan z přívozu na Staten Island. Jedna z věcí, na kterou se už dlouho v New Yorku chystám. Přívoz je totiž zdarma;-) A pak ty ulítlý kreace na hlavách a na obličejích v 80. letech.

If you have more than once replied yes, it is time to sit back and watch a movie. This time it is one of my favorite movies.

The Working Girl

is an American movie from 1988 directed by recently deceased Mike Nichols. Star of the movie is Melanie Griffith, proficiently seconded by Harrison Ford, still in full beauty and extremely annoying Sigourney Weaver. I like two things in this movie. Shots of Manhattan from Staten Island ferry. Taking Staten Island ferry is one of the things I plan to do in NYC for long time. SIF is free;-) And the second one are those hair and makeup creations of the 80s.

Tahák na vánoční a jiné dárky/Cheat sheet for Christmas and other presents

Nikdy nevím, co odpovědět, když se mě někdo zeptá, co bych chtěla k narozeninám nebo k Vánocům. To samé platí, když se mě někdo zeptá, jaký dárek k Vánocům nebo narozeninám pro holky. A sami víte, jak to je, když se zeptáte někoho blízkého, co by si přál a jeho/její odpověď vám vůbec nepomůže.

Sice si ráda dělám seznamy na všechny blbiny, ale seznam dárků pro sebe opravdu nevytvářím. I když zaregistrovala jsem se na www.dejmidarek.cz. Stránka, na které si můžete tvořit seznam svých přání, sdílet ho se svými blízkými a navíc se nechat inspirovat tím, co si přejí ostatní. 

Nedávno jsem objevila malý tahák.

Teď už se dá něco vymyslet, ne?

Něco, co chci. Chci, abysme byli všichni zdraví, šťastní. Prostě taková standardní přání, která si za peníze nekoupíš.

Něco, co potřebuji. Není horší dárek pod stromečkem než nová žehlička. Ale určitě máte nějakého koně a ten potřebuje nové sedlo nebo podkovy alias ráda vaříte a chtěla byste super formu na bábovku ve tvaru středověkého hradu nebo si ráda obhospodařujete svoje hnízdečko a nutně potřebujete deku na gauč, co stojí majlant.

Něco na sebe. Je jen málo lidí nebo nikdo, komu věříte při výběru oblečení. Na druhou stranu s detailním popisem včetně fota, odkazem na stránku eshopu, kde ten vysněný kousek pořídit, si poradí každý.

Něco ke čtení. Razím heslo, že bez knihy pod stromečkem nejsou Vánoce. Není nic krásnějšího než proválet vánoční svátky v posteli s knihou. I když od té doby, co mám dvě děti, to je jen krásná vzpomínka. Ale oni holky povyrostou a budeme se válet všichni čtyři...

Cheet sheet for Xmas and other presents

I never know what to answer, when somebody asks me, what would I like to get for my birthday or Christmas. And similarly I don't know what to say, when somebody asks me about presents for the girls. But on the other hand, you know yourself how awkward it is when you need a tip for presents for your close ones and their answers won't help you.

I like to make lists for all possible bullshits but I definitely don't create lists of gifts for myself, even though I registered myself on www.dejmidarek.cz. This site helps you create a list of your wishes and share it with your family and friends, and when stuck you can get inspiration from other people.

Recently I found out this little cheat sheet.

Something you want. I want us healthy and happy. Just the standard wishes, which money can not buy.

Something you need. There is no worse present under the Christmas tree than a new ironing machine. But I'm sure you have a hobby. You like cooking and you really want this super cake form in the shape of medieval castle or you like to decorate your flat and definitely need the blanket for the sofa, which costs a fortune.

Something to wear. You trust only a few people (or maybe nobody) to buy clothes for you. On the other hand, with a detailed description that includes a picture and a link to the eshop, anyone can manage to get you that dream outfit.

Something to read. There is no Christmas for me without a book under the Christmas tree. There is nothing better than to spend the Christmas holiday in the bed with a book. Well, since I have two kids, that is just a nice memory. But once the girls are bigger all four of us will stay in the bed...

Vévodkyně

z roku 2008, ve kterém Keira zazářila v roli Georgiany Cavendish, vévodkyně z Devonshire. Georgiana se v 17 letech provdala za vévodu z Devonshiru, kterého ve filmu ztvárnil Ralph Fiennes. A podle mě je v tomhle filmu ještě větší záporák než byl v roli Lorda Voldemorta. 

Vévodkyně z Devonshiru byla krásná, silná žena, která měla styl. Ve své době (ve 2. polovině 18. století) patřila k významným osobnostem politického, společenského a kulturního života v Anglii. V osobním životě však nebyla příliš šťastná.

The Duchess 

from 2008, in which Keira starred as Georgiana Cavendish, the Duchess of Devonshire. Georgiana married the Duke of Devonshire when she was 17 years old. Ralph Fiennes as the Duke of Devonshire is even greater villain than he is as Lord Voldemort. 

The Duchess of Devonshire was a beautiful and strong women with style. In her time (the 2nd half of the 18th century) she played important role in political, social and cultural life in England. However, she was not very happy in her personal life.

Těhotenská móda v 60. letech/Maternity fashion in 60s

60. léta byla nabitá událostmi. Američané bojovali ve Vietnamu. Prezidentem USA se stal John Kennedy ale jen na necelé 3 roky, protože na něj byl v listopadu 1963 spáchán atentát. Berlín rozdělila zeď. Pražské jaro v roce 1968, kdy v Československu došlo k politickému uvolnění, ukončila v srpnu 1968 okupace vojsky Varšavské smlouvy v čele se Sovětským svazem.

Natáčely se filmy jako Hitchcockovo Psycho, Formanovo Hoří, má panenko, filmy o Jamesi Bondovi. Začaly hrát kapely Rolling Stones a Beatles. A co nosily těhotné?

V 60. letech se stále ženy snažily své těhotenství schovat. Nosily se volné haleny, i když během 60. let se trochu zužovaly a žena v nich již méně připomínala stan.

Objevily se pouzdrové šaty áčkového střihu, které byly pro rostoucí bříško perfektní. Nosily se v délce ke kolenům nebo koncem 60. let i kratší.

Sukně a kalhoty pro těhotné měly již speciální pásy podobné těm, které známe u těhotenského oblečení dnes. Kalhoty měly nad pasem přidaný pás s protaženými šňůrkami, které umožňovaly kalhoty v pase utahovat dle potřeby.

Na konci 50. let a na začátku 60. let byla těhotná i tehdejší módní ikona Jackie Kennedy.

Nedávno jsem vám doporučovala film Rosemary má děťátko z roku 1968, kde můžete vidět Miu Farrow v krásných těhotenských modelech.

Maternity fashion in 60s

The 60s were a time of great change. Americans were in war with Vietnam. John Kennedy became a US president but only survived for less than 3 years before he was assassinated in November 1963. Berlin was divided by the Wall. Prague Spring in 1968 was a period of political liberalization in the Czechoslovakia, which was ended by the occupation of Warsaw Pact troops lead by the Soviet Union.

Groundbreaking movies like Hitchcock's Psycho, Forman's The Firemen's Ball, and the first of the James Bond series came out. Rolling Stones and Beatles started to play. And what did pregnant women wear?

In 60s women were still trying to hide the pregnancy. They wore smocks, but in 60s smocks became narrow and women wearing them looked less like in tents.

A new trend was a slim fitting sheath dress of A-line shape, which was perfect for a growing bump. The dress was knee-length, and even shorter by the end of the 60s.

Skirts and trousers for pregnant women already had special belly bands similar to the ones we know today. Trousers had an additional panel above the natural waist band with a draw string pull at the top that allowed to tighten the trousers according to the needs of growing bump. 

Jackie Kennedy, fashion icon of her time, was pregnant at the end of 50s and beginning of 60s.

Kdy by neměl rád George Clooneyho?! V americkém filmu 

Děti moje,

který vám chci dneska doporučit, hraje stárnoucí fotříka v havajské košili, který se sám musí postarat o dvě dospívající dcery, protože jeho manželka upadla do kómatu po havárii na motorovém člunu.  

George tentokrát nehraje žádného lamače srdcí ale obyčejného otce. Má to být doják, ale jsou tam i momenty, kdy se zasmějete. A Clooneyho běh je nezapomenutelný...

Who doesn't like Geroge Clooney, right?! In the American movie

The Descendants, 

which I want to recommend you today, he is an aging gaffer wearing Hawaiian shirt, who has to take care of two teenage daughters, because his wife is in comma after the motorboat accident. 

George is not any heartbreaker in this movie but ordinary father. The movie should be a tearjerker but there are moments when you laugh. Clooney's run is unforgettable... 

The movie was done in 2011 by Alexander Payne known for example for the movie Sideways. 

Holka nebo kluk?/Girl or boy?

První otázka, kterou uslyšíte, když prozradíte, že čekáte miminko. Je jedno, jak odpovíte. Rozjede se kolotoč dalších otázek, které nemusí být vždy příjemné.

Odpovíte: Kluk. To většinou tazatele celkem uspokojí, pokud je to vaše první dítě. Ne však, když už máte doma jednoho nebo více synů. Následuje otázka: A nechtěli jste holčičku? Jasně chtěli a jak se to dá zařídit?

Odpovíte: Holka. Možná uslyšíte otázku: A co tatínek není zklamaný? I kdyby byl, tak vás miluje a těší se na svého prvního potomka a žádné zklamání veřejně neprojevuje.

Odpovíte: My to nechceme vědět. Na vteřinu je tazatel zmatený. Tahle odpověď ho zaskočila. Ale vy to víte a nechcete to říkat, viď? Ne, nevíme a chceme se nechat překvapit. Ale jak to můžete vydržet? A jakou barvu oblečení kupujete?

Odpovíte: Víme, ale nepovíme. Jak můžete být vůči svému okolí tak krutá a nepodělit se o sladké tajemství pohlaví vašeho budoucího potomka s celým světem!?

Bez ohledu na vaši odpověď se strhne lavina babských rad, podle kterých zaručeně poznáte, že je to kluk nebo holka. A o tom příště.

Girl or boy?

That is the first question you will hear when you tell somebody that you are expecting a baby. Your answer doesn't matter. It will in any case lead to many more questions, which might not always be pleasant.

Answer: Boy. The person who is asking is usually pretty satisfied with such an answer, if it is your first child. But not if you already have one or more sons at home. It is usually followed by question: And didn't you want have a girl? Sure, we wanted, how can you arrange that?

Answer: Girl. You might hear question: And what about the father, isn't he disappointed? Even if he is disappointed, he loves you and he is looking forward to his first child and he doesn't show any disappointment openly.

Answer: We don't want to know. The inquirer is confused for a second. S/he didn't expected such answer. But you know the gender and you just don't want to say it, right? No, we don't know it and we want to be surprised. How can you stand it? And which color clothes do you buy?

Answer: We know it, but we don't want to tell anyone. How can you be so cruel and not share your sweet secret of the gender of your future descendant with the rest of the world!?

Regardless of your answer it will start an avalanche of the old-wives tales, that will certainly reveal to you whether it will be a girl or a boy. And that will be the next post.

Těhotenská móda v 50. letech minulého století/Maternity fashion in 1950s

Historický vývoj v 50.letech se ve světě výrazně lišil. V USA a v západní Evropě došlo k ekonomickému rozvoji. Ve státech střední a východní Evropy panoval tuhý komunistický režim.

Stále byly populární zavinovací šaty i šaty s propínáním. Novým hitem se staly dvoudílné šaty. Konečně bylo totiž v módě akceptovatelné, aby žena neměla zdůrazněný pas.

Zavinovací sukně měla kolový střih nebo rovný tužkový. V přední části byla sukně o 2 až 5cm delší. Typické mateřské oblečení v 50. letech byla celopropínací volná blůza a úzká tzv. tužková sukně.

Objevily se také kalhoty pro těhotné. Maminka na obrázku má na sobě rovnou vestu oblečenou přes triko s dlouhým rukávem a 3/4 kalhoty.

V roce 1955 byly patentovány první mateřské spodní kalhotky. Přední pás těchto kalhotek byl vysoce elastický a tak i při rostoucím objemu se žena stále cítila pohodlně.

Na konci 50. let byla těhotná monacká kněžna Grace.

Maternity fashion in 1950s

Historical development in the 50s was significantly different around the world. In the USA and Western Europe there was economic expansion, but in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe tough communist regimes arose.

Wrap front dress and shirtwaists were still popular. New hit was a two-piece dress - it was finally acceptable for women to not have a waistline. 

A wrap around style skirt was full circle or straight pencil shape. The front skirt line was an inch or two longer. Typical maternity clothes in the 50s was a smock over the pencil skirt. 

There were also pants for pregnant women. The mother on the picture wears a sleeveless, straight-waistline vest over a long-sleeved shirt and 3/4 pants. 

In 1955 the maternity panty was patented. The front panel of this maternity panty was highly elastic and so even in extreme stretched conditions, the woman could still feel comfortable.

Grace, Princess of Monaco was pregnant at the end of the 1950s.

Máte rádi Downton Abbey? Já moc. Ale nebyla to láska na první pohled. Před dvěma týdny jsem dokoukali poslední díl 5. série a teď zbývá jen čekat na vánoční speciál. A tak aby to čekání nebylo tak dlouhé, pustíme si o víkendu 

Gosford Park.

Film natočil v roce 2001 slavný americký režisér Robert Altman. Je to detektivka odehrávající se v roce 1932 na venkovském šlechtickém sídle. 

Robert Altman obsadil do svého filmu hvězdy jako Helen Mirren, Emily Watson, Clive Owen, Kristin Scott Thomas nebo Maggie Smith, která právě září i v Downton Abbey.

Do you like Downton Abbey? I do a lot. But it was not love at first sight. We saw the last episode of season 5 two weeks ago and now we have to wait for the Xmas special. To make the waiting shorter we are going to watch movie 

Gosford Park

this weekend. The movie was shot by famous American director Robert Altman in 2001. It is a drama, which takes place in a country house in England in 1932. 

Movie is full of great actors such as Helen Mirren, Emily Watson, Clive Owen, Kristin Scott Thomas or  Maggie Smith, who is great in Downton Abbey.

Minulý post odstartoval sérii článků o těhotenské módě v dobách minulých, konkrétně 40. léta 20. století.

A  v jednom čísle časopisu Glamour* z roku 1944 bylo věnováno 10 stran otázkám týkajícím se těhotenství. A možná právě v tomto vydání se objevily následující módní rady a tipy, čemu se má těhotná při oblékání vyhnout a co naopak zvýraznit. Myslím, že řada z nich platí stále. Ale některé z nich vyvolávají úsměv a smích.

Maternity fashion in 1940s

Last post started a series of articles about pregnancy fashion in the past, particularly 1940s.

In one of the issues of Glamour* in 1944 there were 10 pages devoted to questions about pregnancy. And perhaps in this edition, appeared the following fashion tips what should pregnant women dress, what to avoid and on the contrary what to highlight. I think many of those tips still apply. But some of them will make you smile or laugh.

*Glamour is women's magazine, which has been published in the USA since 1939.

Znáte filmy Absolvent, Podnikavá dívka, Na dotek nebo Vlk? A víte, co mají společné? Ano, režíroval je Mike Nichols, který tento týden zemřel ve věu 83 let. A dnešní film na víkend je vzpomínkou na Mika Nicholse. Je to méně známý film z roku 1986 v hlavní roli s Meryl Streep a Jackem Nicholsonem natočený podle autobiografické stejnojmenné knihy Nory Ephron o jejím manželství s Carlem Bernsteinem

Hořkost

V jedné z vedlejších rolí se objeví i Miloš Forman a jen tak pro zajímavost příjmení hlavních hrdinů je Forman.

A teď kdo je Nora Ephron a Carl Bernstein? 

Nora Ephron byla newyorská spisovatelka, scénáristka, produkční, režisérka a v neposlední řadě také amatérská kuchařka. Napsala scénář k romantickým komediím jako Samotář v Seattlu, Když Harry potkal Sally, Láska přes Internet nebo Julie a Julia. S Carlem Bernsteinem měla dva syny Jacoba a Maxe. Ve filmu má dvě holčičky.

Carl Bernstein je americký novinář, který se proslavil spolu s Bobem Woodwardem odhalením aféry Watergate. Ve  filmu o aféře Watergate Všichni prezidentovi muži ho ztvárnil Dustin Hoffman. Ve skutečnosti jeho manželství s Norou Ephronem skončilo kvůli románku s dcerou britksého ministerského předsedy a manželkou britského velvyslance v USA.

Do you know movies such as The Graduate, Working Girl, Closer or Wolf? And do you know, what they have in common? Yes, all of them were directed by Mike Nichols, who died this week at the age of 83. Movie for this weekend is a memory of Mike Nichols. It is his less known movie from 1986 starring Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson based on Nora Ephron's autobiography about her marriage with Carl Bernstein

Heartburn

Miloš Forman appears in the movie as a supporting actor. And interesting fact is that the surname of the main protagonists is Forman. 

And now who is Nora Ephron and Carl Bernstein? 

Nora Ephron was novelist, screenwriter, producer, director and also amateur cook. She wrote screenplays for romantic comedies such as Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally, You've got Mail or Julie & Julia. She had two sons, Jacob and Max, with Carl Bernstein. In the movie they have two daughters. 

Carl Bernstein is a reporter who got famous together with Bob Woodward for uncovering the Watergate scandal. In the movie All the President's Men he was played by Dustin Hoffman. In reality, his marriage with Nora Ephron finished because of his affair with a daughter of the British Prime Minister and wife of British Ambassador in the US. 

Jak přesvědčit děti, aby jedli zeleninu/How to convince kids to eat vegetables

Moje dcera nejí zeleninu. Vlastně jen mrkev ideálně syrovou a vařené brambory. Jednou ochutnala okurku. Papirky a rajčata si jen lízla. Nepomohlo ani to, že prasátko Peppa má zeleninu ráda. Zvolila přístup jejího bratra Tomíka. Nemám rád salát.... 

Našla jsem několik rad, jak přesvědčit dítě, aby zeleninu ochutnalo.

1. Rodiče jdou dítěti příkladem. Když děti uvidí, jak si pochutnáváte na rajčatech, okurce, paprice, třeba převáží jejich zvědavost a budou chtít také ochutnat.

2. Zeleninu servírujte dětem jako předkrm dříve, než jim na stůl přinesete další jídlo.

3. Udělejte z pojídání zeleniny hru. Děti zavřou oči a vy jim dáte kousek papriky a ony musí uhodnout jakou barvu paprika měla.

4. Hlad je nejlepší kuchař. Když děti dostanou menší porci hlavního jídla a více zeleniny, zvyšuje se šance, že sní i zeleninu.

5. Použijte marketingovou taktiku a pojmenujte zeleninu chutnějšími a hezčími názvy. Zeleninu vykrájejte do zajímavých tvarů a servírujte zajímavějším způsobem.

6. Po jídle zůstaňte u stolu o chvíli déle a s dětmi si povídejte. Třeba o tom, kam vyrazíte o víkendu. Možná budou během konverzace uzobávat ze svého talíře nedojedenou zeleninu.

7. Děti rády jedí to, co pomáhaly připravit. Mohou zeleninu omýt, zkusit krájet nebo aranžovat na talíř.

8. Zeleninu a ovoce rozmixujte a podávejte jako koktejl nebo smoothie.

9. Když všechno selže, zeleninu do jídla prostě propašujte. Třeba do muffinů lze přidat, cuketu, dýni, mrkev nebo červenou řepu. 

10. Nenechte se odradit prvotními neúspěchy, odpověďmi Nechci a Ble a neúnavně zeleninu nabízejte. Jednou ji určitě ochutnají. Někde jsem četla, že nabízet musíte 7x až 20x, než dítě něco ochutná.

How to convince kids to eat vegetables

My daughter doesn't eat vegetables. Actually she eats carrots, ideally raw, and cooked potatoes. Once she tried a cucumber. And she just licked a pepper and tomato. It didn't help that Peppa the Pig liked vegetables. She chose Peppa's brother George's approach - I don't like salad... 

I found few tips, how to convince kids to try vegetables. 

1. Parents are role models. If a kid sees how you eat tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, s/he might get curious and want to try them too. 

2. Serve vegetables as appetizer before serving the main dish. 

3. Make it a game. Kids will close their eyes, take a bite and should guess what color was the pepper. 

4. Hunger is the best cook. If kids get a smaller portion of the main dish and more vegetables, the chances that they will also eat vegetables increase. 

5. Use marketing tactics and rename vegetables with yummier and cooler names. Cut the vegetables into interesting shapes and serve it in more interesting ways.

6. After you finished eating, stay with the kids at the table for little longer and chat. Perhaps about your weekend plans. They might finish the vegetables which were left on their plates. 

7. Kids like to eat what they prepared. They can wash the vegetables, try to cut the or arrange the on the plate. 

8. Mix vegetables and fruits and serve cocktails and smoothies. 

9. When everything fails, sneak the vegetables into their food, You can add zucchini, pumpkin, carrot or beet into the muffins. 

10. Do not get discouraged by the early failures and their answers I don't want that! Yuk! and tirelessly keep offering the vegetables. Once they will try it. I read somewhere that you should offer 7 to 20 times before the kid will try something.

Těhotenské móda ve 40. letech minulého století - 1. část/Maternity fashion in 1940s - 1st part

Dnešním příspěvkem začínám sérii článků o těhotenské módě v dobách minulých.

Zajímá vás, co nosily naše babičky a prababičky v době těhotenství? Pojďme se kouknout na těhotenskou módu ve 40. letech minulého století. V první polovině 40. let zuřila druhá světová válka. Po skončení války, kdy se muži vrátili z války domů, došlo v řadě zemí k tzv. baby boomu.  

Těhotenská móda 40. let navazovala na módu z let 30. Oblíbeným těhotenským modelem byly zavinovací šaty, které bylo možné díky řadě knoflíků po straně přizpůsobovat rostoucímu bříšku.

Podobně i zavinovací šaty s propínáním. Byly propínací buď do pasu nebo po celé délce, a proto byly vhodné i na kojení.

Volná blůza se původně nosila přes šaty při domácích pracech a vaření, aby si žena šaty neumazala. Těhotné si však volnou blůzu natolik oblíbily, že se stala součástí těhotenského šatníku.

Sukně měla vykrojení vepředu, nastavitelné pásky přes ramena a stuhu v pase, což umožňovalo přizpůsobit se měnící se postavě.  

Zajímavostí je, že modelky nebyly nikdy těhotné. 

Na konci 40. let byla těhotná i anglická královna Alžběta II.

Maternity fashion in 1940s

With today's post I'm starting a series of articles about maternity fashion in the past.

Have you wondered what our grandmothers and great-grandmothers wore during pregnancy? Let's take a look at the maternity fashion of the 40s of the last century. The World War II was raging in the first half of the 1940s. When men came back home from the war, in many countries the so called baby-boom started.

Maternity fashion of the 40s followed the fashion from the 30s. Favorite pregnancy outfit was a wrap front dress, which was possible thanks to the row of buttons on the side adjusted to the growing bump.

Similarly, the shirtwaist was buttoned either half way or all the way down the front of the dress, so it was also suitable for breastfeeding. 

The smock top was originally designed to wear over the dress while doing housework or cooking not to get dirty. Pregnant women liked the smock top a lot and it became a regular part of maternity wear.

The pregnancy skirt had the cut-out front, adjustable shoulders straps and ribbon tie across the front, which allowed the necessary figure changes. 

Interesting is that the models were not pregnant.

Queen Elizabeth II was pregnant at the end of  the 40s.
